Online gambling is a controversial topic in Sweden at the moment, and opinions vary. Some people are calling for stricter restrictions, while others say the current regime is already too restrictive and the success of the regulated market in directing players away from unlicensed operators.
But this is business as usual for Spelinspektionen, the country’s gambling regulator, and it continues to issue new licenses for online gambling, despite all the turmoil. Recently, another operator received permission from Spelinspektionen to enter the Swedish market – this is Alea Ltd. The company received a three-year license last week, according to a statement on the gambling regulator’s website.
Alea owns SlotsMillion, a very successful online casino that made a name for itself a few years ago, becoming the first online gaming business to engage in virtual reality. SlotsMillion currently offers more than 3,000 slot games, 317 table games and 40 VR games from more than 100 of the world’s most popular iGaming content providers.
The operator is also licensed by the UK Gambling Commission and the Maltese Gambling Authority, so the SlotsMillion brand already has experience in some of the largest gambling markets in Europe and on other continents. Alea became the 98th online gambling operator to receive a license from Spelinspektionen as part of a reorganization of the Swedish market that began early last year.
And while some are currently preparing to enter the Swedish iGaming space, others have just announced their withdrawal after protesting a proposal by Swedish Social Security Minister Ardalan Shekarabi to introduce new weekly limits on deposits and bonuses during the Covid pandemic. -19, which has covered the whole world.
ComeOn Group, which is owned by Swedish charter group Cherry, said last week that it was closing two of its online casinos – Sveacasino.com and Cherrycasino.com. These brands will only be closed in Sweden. The company also stated that it had renounced the licenses for those marks which it had previously obtained from Spelinspektionen.
The CEO of ComeOn was among a group of executives of gambling operators who signed a letter to Minister Shekarabi urging him not to accept plans for weekly deposit limits and bonuses.
The Swedish government claims that the application of such restrictions would counteract the negative impact of the large increase in online gambling amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, industry stakeholders have noted that the move will actually direct gamblers to the black market – illegal casinos, where there are no restrictions, but also no safeguards.
